How Did The Gibeonites Save Themselves?

joshua_deceived-by-the-gibeonites

The Gibeonites heard the fame of Joshua and the Israelite, how they defeated many cities in Canaan and they grew afraid. They decided to disguise themselves as envoys from a far away city that have travel a long distance to make peace treaty with the Israelite after hearing the victories of the Israelite. They came in donkeys that were loaded with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended. They also wore patched sandals and old clothes as proofs that they really came from a far city and had traveled a great distance to make peace treaty with the Israelite.

Joshua and the Israelite believed the Gibeonites without inquiring God and made a peace treaty with them. The Israelite found out that the Gibeonites live near the Israelites in Canaan after 3 days. They regretted this decision but they cannot turn back on their word and attack their city anymore. Instead, the Israelite made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers. You can read about the story of the Gibeonites in Joshua 9.

Saul broke this promise by killing many of the Gibeonites so that their population is decimated. As a result, God punished the land with famine for 3 years. To pay back Saul’s deeds, David handed over 2 sons of Aiah’s daughter Rizpah and 5 sons of Saul’s daughter Merab to the Gibeonites who killed them and exposed their bodies on a hill (2 Samuel 21). We must always keep the promise we made by fulfilling what we say. If you are unable to fulfill the promise, you should not make that promise in the first place. If you did not fulfill your promise, you should apologize to the person and ask God’s forgiveness.

Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. (Matthew 5:33-37 KJV)

Then shalt thou be clear from this my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give not thee one, thou shalt be clear from my oath. (Genesis 24:41 KJV)

Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him (Colossians 3:9-10 KJV)

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV)

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. (Romans 1:28-32 KJV)

Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight. (Proverbs 12:22 KJV)

He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. (1 John 2:4 KJV)

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8 KJV)

He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. (1 John 3:8 KJV)

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. (John 8:44 KJV)
